Organisations in the same field drift toward looking identical. Three different pressures push them there. For each case, name the pressure doing the work.

What is pushing them to conform?
This drift toward sameness is institutional isomorphism (DiMaggio and Powell, 1983). The uncomfortable part: much of it chases legitimacy, not results. Organisations adopt a practice because everyone respectable does, whether or not anyone has checked that it works.
So when everyone in your field does the same thing, ask which kind it is. Some conventions are load-bearing: break them and you look illegitimate. Others are cargo cult: copied for years, never tested. The edge lives in telling them apart, instead of copying the field on autopilot.
