You lead a group. Different goals need different feelings, and the feeling you reach decides what the group actually does. Tap what you need them to do, and see which group-based emotion really drives it.
What do you need the group to do?
Each feeling drives one particular action: anger moves a group to confront, fear to pull back, pride to belong, guilt to make amends, contempt to shut others out (Mackie, Devos and Smith, 2000; Smith, Seger and Mackie, 2007). So to move a group you have to reach the emotion that actually drives the action you want. Aim for anger and land on fear, and they retreat instead of acting.
Two of these push a group against another: anger and contempt. They are not the same. Anger at an injustice can still grant the other side their standing as human beings; contempt works by denying it. That line, humanity kept or humanity stripped, is the one that matters most whenever this machinery is used.
