Same facts, opposite feeling

You will read a few short statements and rate your gut reaction to each. Do not overthink it, go with the first feeling. Then see what the wording was quietly doing.

Statement 1 of 6

Every pair described the same facts. A 90% survival rate is a 10% death rate; 90% fat-free is 10% fat; one person's story and the wider trend are the same problem. Yet your reaction moved, because wording is not neutral packaging, it is part of the decision (Tversky and Kahneman, 1981; Iyengar, 1991).

The honest test for any frame you use: would it still work if your audience saw everything you left out? If not, you are not framing, you are misleading.

One caution the other way: framing bends choices, it rarely dictates them (Kühberger, 1998). Treat it as a real but moderate lever, in others' hands and your own.
