Aysha is picturing who she might become. Pick one of her futures to follow, then watch what it takes to turn a daydream into something that actually moves her.
Which future should we follow?
The hope alone barely moved the needle, a pleasant daydream. The feared self gave it something to push away from, and one concrete step gave it traction. A hope, balanced by the fear it answers and tied to a strategy, is what turns an imagined future into a real pull (Oyserman and Markus, 1990; Oyserman, Bybee and Terry, 2006). Vividness on its own does almost nothing.
One last thing to watch for, in Aysha or in yourself: the moment you start enjoying the picture instead of taking the step. That is where imagining quietly replaces doing.
