Which self is talking?

Three beliefs hide inside the word "confidence". Sort each statement into the one it belongs to.

What you just sorted

They feel like one thing, but they behave completely differently:

Self-concept just describes you, and a global label ("not a tech person") is slow to change and quietly resists evidence.
Self-esteem judges your overall worth, and surprisingly it mostly follows how life is going rather than driving it, which is why trying to pump it up rarely helps.
Self-efficacy, the narrowest and least grand of the three, is the one that reliably predicts whether you will actually try, persist, and succeed, and the only one you can deliberately build, by stacking small real wins.

So the useful question is rarely "how do I feel about myself?" It is "do I believe I can do this specific thing, and what small win would make that belief true?"

Self-efficacy as the buildable, behaviour-driving belief (Bandura, 1977); self-esteem as mostly a result rather than a cause (Baumeister et al., 2003).
